Getting to Know Tom Ford

Updated: Aug 18

Perfectionist is not a strong enough adjective for Tom Ford's work ethos. Obsessively, maddeningly, resoundingly dedicated to perfection of craft, Tom Ford is almost altruistic in his approach when thinking about how customers react to his products. Oprah explores Tom's approach more in her #VisionariesInsidetheCreativeMind series.

Tom's respite is the bathtub. The designer/actor/filmmaker/activist sometimes takes up to four baths per day, laying meditatively and letting his thoughts wander.

An icon in the fashion industry, Tom Ford singlehanded transformed Gucci into the pre-eminent luxury brand in the world during his fourteen years there from 1990 to 2004.

"In eyewear, it is the small detailing that expresses the luxury. Custom crafted hinges, unusual color mélanges, or simply the look of empty space around the lenses - these are what make accessories into precious objects," he says. The empty space around the lens is a hallmark of Tom Ford design from Gucci through his own eponymous collections now.

Crafted in Italy with Tom Ford's second-to-none quality standards, each pair of sunglasses evokes a sense of true iconic status and sophistication.

A good trick as you get older is to get a thick pair of glasses that have a dark frame. Everything else can droop and slide but that pair of dark glasses stays sharp and crisp. -Tom Ford
